Maverick Medical Education to Receive Patent for Pulsatile Technology

Technology offers expansive cadaver-based observation and education experience

IOLA, Texas–Today, Maverick Medical Education formally announced that they would be awarded patent claims for their signature pulsatile technology by the United States Patent and Technology Office in January of 2022. CRNA’s Dan Nash and David Gaskin began developing the technology in 2015 and initially filed for the patent in 2017.

“We’re thrilled to be receiving a patent–and credibility–for our pulsatile technology, which has already had a significant impact on our teaching capabilities,” said the developer of the technology and CRNA Dan Nash. “We are the first in the anesthesia industry to receive a patent for this type of technology, which has revolutionized our ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia education. With this technology, we offer students high-fidelity simulation via cadaveric specimens, making the education experience as realistic and valuable as possible.”

The Maverick partners began working on this technology in early 2015 after partners Dan and David identified the need to make modernize ultrasound regional nerve block training and make it more efficient. They decided to embark upon a journey to figure out how to make cadaveric specimens pulsatile–or have a pulse–to increase the fidelity of the education experience for the learner.

After multiple iterations and trial and error, Maverick identified small and powerful pumps to power their pulsatile technology. Then, they developed the components and began testing them in their facility over the past four years.

“We would not have been able to develop this technology without the help of our partners,” continued Nash. “We’d like to thank Dr. Landon Nash, who helped identify the necessary components for building the pumps; Dr. Dan O’dunoghue and Dr. Mary Moon from the Oklahoma University Department of Biology; and Dr. Cara Fisher from the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center, who were all instrumental in sharing their anatomical knowledge for creating this new technology.”
