Benefits

There are some medical trainings that work well by watching videos, book learning, and observation, but there are a number that aren’t. This is especially true for the courses our Maverick team offers, with hands-on experience not just being beneficial, but being vital to learning anesthesia and pain management techniques. Skin, muscles, and other tissue provides a very specific amount of resistance and understanding the way a needle will pass through those spaces is needed for students to learn proper placement of nerve blocks and other injections. As students practice on cadavers, they learn to use the feedback for guidance creating better outcomes in the medical setting.

Quality

It would be possible for Maverick to use gel phantoms and substrate trainers for many of the techniques, but nothing can replicate cadaver experience. Additionally, not all cadavers are the same and our trainings use high-quality cadavers with light embalming. This preservation allows for the closest model to the clinical setting by maintaining the suppleness of joints and the best tactile feedback when performing procedures. By investing in the highest quality specimens, we can maximize training proficiency. Additionally, our patent-approved technology to provide pulsatile simulation provides true feedback for our students. In the video below, we use one of our instructors as a live model while also performing the same ultrasound on one of the cadavers, and the imagery is nearly identical.

Repetition

There are some techniques we can use live models for and will whenever we can, however, cadavers provide an additional benefit and that is providing the repetition our students need for proficiency. A live model may be willing to sit for a single nerve block or for a set amount of time for ultrasound observation, but performing multiple blocks, the number our students need to walk away with the experience they need to perform the procedures in their clinical settings, would be impossible. By utilizing the cadavers in our labs, we can offer every student plenty of opportunities to practice, with the guidance of our Maverick instructors, until their technique is perfect.
